Russ was born in Long Beach, California in 1964. He lived in Phoenix, Arizona during his earliest years, until his family moved to Bakersfield, California, where Russ attended school and grew up. When he was 14, he began playing guitar, singing, and composing his own songs. The Jesus Movement of the 1970′s had a major impact on him, and continues to be a strong influence on his music. “Take the Throne,” the last song on “Your Child,” was his first composition, written when he was just a young teen.
His first CD, “Your Child” was recorded at the end of 1999, with four other talented musicians. It’s when Russ’ son, Jorim, almost 13 at the time, discovered he was musical, playing the bongos for the title song, “Your Child.” Since then, whenever background instrumentation has been called for, Jorim adds piano, strings, percussion, bass, and/or electric guitar.
Several of Russ’ compositions are instrumentals, which he wrote after returning to the states from an inspired stay on Prince Edward Island, Canada, the winter of 1995. And, as is the case with all Russ’ music, some of the recordings are just Russ and his guitar, some have orchestration added by Jorim. (The piano for “The Piano Man” is played by Ken Secor.)
By day, Russ is a banker, and, a happy dog owner (seen here with Nim). His very favorite pastime (wonder of wonders) is listening to and playing music.
